The film takes the viewer back into winter 1951, when Bogdana, a 7-year-old girl, lives her day-to-day life as the outcast. 

 

The celebration of Orthodox’ Christmas Day is a linking element that combines two historical epochs into one breathtaking narrative. Two different timeframes, the 2020s, and 1950s are confronting one another to depict Ukrainian traditions, political situations, and social norms. Bogdana’s father was politically convicted and got into prison for 10 years. In turn, Bogdana and her mother were seen as predators, more specifically they were labeled “Banderivtsi” (the banderivtsi are members of an assortment of right-wing organizations in Ukraine who fought for independence). Due to that, Bogdana was excluded from school by both teachers and students, her mother was always watched and could get punished for any “wrong” word or action, they starved and the little girl must have gone against her morals and steal wheat so that they can survive.

 

A creative spin on a classical documentary allows telling the story in a cinematic and appealing manner by combining the codes and conventions of a classical documenter and of a historical drama movie. The lavish instrumental Ukrainian musical numbers performed on bandura tight the story together editing drama and authenticity.
