CONTEXT

B

OLENIVKA, UKRAINE

Bogdana Bezkorovayna was born in 1944 in the village Olenivka, which is located in Western Ukraine.

Starting from 1922 Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union. In the second half of the 1940s, the Western Ukrainian lands were forcibly integrated into the totalitarian system. During World War II, the Satin regime was afraid that Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UIA) will try to get independence for Ukrainian territories. Thus, many Ukrainian men were politically convicted and sent to Syberia. Life in Western Ukraine became even harder as people were afraid of the regime, especially of regular KGB (the Committee for State Security) inspections. They would enter people’s houses to ensure that they are not connected by any means to the liberation movement.
